Introductory Research project for To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Research one topic and prepare notes on said topic. Along with doing research, find accompanying pictures, a political cartoon and video clips in relation to the topic. Work in small groups of four to six students. Each group will pick one of the following topics (only one group per topic):
Topic 1The Great Depression- be sure to include
· When did the Great Depression begin and what signified the ending?
· What governmental reforms were put into place as a result of the Great Depression? How have these governmental reforms changed over time?
· What was the stock market crash? What did this signify for Americans?
· What was the dust bowl? How did this effect the farmers? Find one narrative related to the effect of poverty as a result of the dust bowl.
· Compare the unemployment rate during the great depression to the current unemployment rate.
· Describe life for the average American citizen during the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. What would life have been like for an African American? What would it have been like for an immigrant?
· Any other information that you find important and interesting about the Great Depression.
Topic 2 Racism in the South in regards to African Americans- be sure to include
· Scottsboro Boy Trials- Who was charged with a crime? What was the punishment for this crime? How long did the trial last? What evidence was used as proof that a crime was committed?
· Who was Emmett Till? What happened to him?
· Jim Crow Laws- Give at least seven examples of Jim Crow laws. Describe the effect of each law. What did President Eisenhower do to force integration and put an end to segregation in Southern schools? What three Acts signified the end to the ability for any state to discriminate, disenfranchise, or otherwise restrict any individual on the basis of race?
· Describe the history of the Ku Klux Klan. What were some of their actions in their beginning? What are some of their actions now? What laws do they rely upon to continue their existence?
· Describe the history of the NAACP. What were some of the obstacles that they had to overcome in the beginning? Give examples of some actions and reforms that have resulted from the work of the NAACP members.
· Anti-lynching bill of 1937- what incident did this bill stem from? What was the result of the bill? What does this insinuate about the political and social environment of the late 1930’s?
· Compare and Contrast the actions of people from the North and people from the South during the late 1920’s and 1930’s. How has this changed in comparison to present day?
· Any other information that you find relevant and interesting about Racism.
Topic 3 Women’s Rights- be sure to include
· What was the role of women during the 1900’s? What roles do women play today?
· Who is Susan B. Antony?
· Describe the effects of World War I and World War II on the role of Women.
· Define Sufferage. Who were the sufferagettes? When did women receive the right to vote? What constitutional amendment is this?
· What are some significant milestones in the women’s rights movement? Be certain to discuss the National Women’s Trade Union League, Margaret Sanger, Daughter’s of Blitis, The Feminine Mystique, The National Organization for Women, Equal Rights Amendement, Title IX, Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson, and Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act
Topic 4 Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s
· What was President Truman’s Executive Order 9981?
· Brown Vs. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas- in what year was this case first argued? When did it go before the supreme court? What did the Supreme Court rule, and what was the impact of this ruling?
· Who was Rosa Parks? What did Ms. Parks do? What happened to Ms. Parks as a result of her actions? How did African American’s react to this?
· Who was Martin Luther King, Jr.? What was he awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for? What were some of his accomplishments? What happened to Dr. King?
· Describe the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. What were some of their accomplishments?
· Describe the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
· Who were the Black Panthers and what was their goal in organizing?
· Describe the Civil Rights Act of 1991.
The research should be in-depth and include citations of their sources, using MLA style of citation. The questions associated with the topics must be covered in detail, and additional information related to the topic is expected.
Put together a group presentation. Your group will need to show a complete understanding of the topic and be able to teach the class about the topic.
Each groups presentation will need to be a minimum of fifteen minutes. Each participant of the group will be required to present some information for their topic.
Each presentation will include at a minimum a PowerPoint presentation, video clip(s), and political cartoon with a description.
