This class is a production class; therefore, there are a variety of assignments each day. One student may not have the exact same assignment as another due to responsibilities of the student for editing and deadline purposes. If a student is absent, he/she should email Mrs. Cooper to find out what was missed that day and what lesson the student should complete in yearbook avenue to stay current with skills necessary for upcoming production tasks.
Classroom Rules Respect everyone in the classroom. Be on time. Come to class prepared. Work diligently. Be courteous of each other and the journalism materials. Follow the rules and regulations provided in the school handbook. Inappropriate language and behavior will not be tolerated.
These are simple expectations and I do not expect anyone to have problems following them.
In this class, we will make and complete the yearbook; therefore, we do not have time to deal with silly discipline problems. If you become a discipline problem, you may be asked to take another class.
Picture Assignments Each quarter you will be assigned a picture assignment. This will mean going to a football game, volleyball game, etc. I will provide a list of the various games, and you will choose your own picture assignment. If you are unable to make that game, switch with someone else. If you are sick or an emergency arises and you are unable to find someone to cover your assignment, contact me via email, and I will try to get your assignment covered for you. You will have plenty of time to notify your boss that you will need the night off. Each picture assignment is worth a possible 100 points. It is an all or nothing deal. If you miss your assignment, you receive a zero.
Page Deadlines We will be working on deadlines; therefore, it is very important that you get the pages assigned to you in on time. I will never give you more than you can handle. However, if unforeseen problems arise, you may need to come in before or after school or during your PE hour to make sure you make the deadline.
Each page deadline is worth a hundred points. The finalized page is due at the beginning of the hour. If you turn the page in at the end of the hour, 10 points will be deducted. If you turn the page in prior to the end of the day (3:00), 20 points will be deducted. If you turn the page in the next morning, 30 points will be deducted. If you turn the page in the next class period, 75 points will be deducted. The page has to be turned in no matter what, even if you are down to receiving no points for the page. All pages must be submitted before you will receive a grade from this course on your transcript.
Selling Sponsorships You will be responsible for going out into the community and selling sponsorships. Be responsible and show pride in your school. The community gets an impression of the school by how you act while performing school business; therefore, act like the adults that you are. I will be calling the businesses and checking to make sure that you acted appropriately. Remember we need these ads to help defer the cost of this very expensive yearbook.
Computers It is impossible to be able to perform the duties of this class if you lose your computer privileges. Anyone who loses their computer privileges will be asked to drop the course.
Newspaper Articles Each month, you will be responsible for publishing an article in one of our local papers. Your article is due the day before the newspaper’s deadline, so it can be proofed and finalized. Your article should be finalized for publication by the end of the class period the day before the newspaper’s deadline to receive full credit. We must have Mr. McKinney approve all our articles before they are published, so we need to submit the articles to him a day before the deadline in order to ensure he has enough time to look the articles over prior to submission to the newspapers. 10 points are deducted if you do not have your article turned in prior to the beginning of the class, another 10 points are deducted if you do not have your article finalized prior to the end of the class, and an additional 10 points are deducted if you do not have your article finalized by the end of the day prior to newspaper deadline. If you do not have your article finalized prior to the beginning of class on the day of the newspaper deadline, you will be deducted another 10 points. If you do not have your article finalized by the end of the class period you will be deducted another 10 points. If you fail to make the newspaper deadline, you will receive a zero for the newspaper assignment.
Grade Policy Your assignments will be worth a determined amount of points. I grade using the points system. Remember if you receive 7/10 points, you received a seventy percent for that assignment, but it doesn’t figure into your grade as a seventy percent. For example you receive a 8/10 on a assignment and a 70/100 on another assignment, you have 78/110 points, which is 71% not 75%.
